Private LTE Planning: Coverage, Devices, Cost & Support

A private LTE discussion should start with the applications that lose connectivity today. A warehouse scanner, a moving vehicle, and a fixed camera can have very different needs. Document those needs before deciding which network technology fits.

Map where service must work

Mark the required operating areas on a site plan: indoor spaces, yards, loading areas, routes, and transition points between buildings. Describe heights, materials, obstructions, moving equipment, and places where a dropped session creates a problem. Include areas where service is useful but not essential.

A coverage drawing is a planning input. Agree on a survey and a method for measuring performance in the real environment. For moving equipment, test the route while the application is active; a stationary reading in an empty building cannot answer every operational question.

Inventory devices and applications

List the exact devices, quantities, operating systems, supported radio bands, and application versions. Ask the supplier to confirm compatibility and how each device will be provisioned. Include replacement devices and future additions in the plan.

For each application, describe the traffic direction, expected data volume, response needs, and tolerance for interruption. Avoid specifying “low latency” without an application requirement and a test. Compare Wi-Fi, carrier service, and private cellular against the same operating need.

Ask how spectrum access will be managed

U.S. CBRS operates in the 3550–3700 MHz band and uses a shared access framework. The FCC’s rules and subsequent public notices describe Spectrum Access Systems that coordinate access and protect incumbent users. [1] [2]

Ask the network designer which spectrum arrangement applies, who manages registrations and ongoing access, and how a change in spectrum availability affects service. In this context, “SAS” means Spectrum Access System; on the service pages, SAS means Superior Access Solutions. They are different terms.

Define the network and support boundary

Identify which party provides the radios, core network, backhaul, power, switching, security configuration, device enrollment, and monitoring. Make the handoff to your existing network explicit. Ask what continues working if a wide-area connection fails and how the design will demonstrate that behavior.

Include change control, remote access, logs, patching, configuration backup, and decommissioning in the scope. Assign a person to approve access and an escalation contact for incidents. A private network still needs an operating and security plan.

Compare lifecycle cost and acceptance

Ask for separate equipment, installation, software, spectrum-service, monitoring, support, and renewal costs. Identify assumptions about cabling, mounting, permits, power, and site access. Do not compare a hardware-only price with a managed-service proposal as if they cover the same work.

Use representative devices and applications in acceptance testing. Test the required routes and operating areas, then document exceptions, the owner of each fix, and a retest date. For sites in PA, NY, NJ, and DE, plan each facility’s access and installation window individually.
