Chester County appears in two entries on Pennsylvania's October 1 broadband awards list. Residents waiting for better internet access can use the state's project map to look up their location, but the grant totals need careful reading: both entries cover several counties.
The Pennsylvania Broadband Development Authority announced the awards on October 2, 2026, as part of more than $448 million for projects in 50 counties. The funding comes through the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment program, known as BEAD.
Which awards include Chester County
The state's awards table, dated October 1, lists:
- Commonwealth Telephone Company, doing business as Frontier Communications: $16,651,639 for fiber service covering 2,407 locations across six counties, including Chester.
- IBT Group USA: $39,684,764 for fixed wireless service covering 15,283 locations across 12 counties, including Chester.
Those dollar amounts and location counts describe the full award entries. The table does not break out Chester County's share or identify individual addresses. Adding the two awards would not produce a county funding total.
For a household deciding whether to keep an existing internet plan, this distinction matters. An award identifies funded work; it does not establish that service can be ordered at that home today.
Check the location and the project status
The Pennsylvania Broadband Project Location Map provides a more specific starting point. PBDA recommends viewing it on a desktop or laptop.
After reading the opening notice, use the Find address or place search box. The map also has filters for county, internet provider and funding program. Select Chester in the county filter and apply the selection to narrow the project records.
A project entry includes fields for municipality, provider, technology, funding program, build status and service availability. Read these together. A date without its construction status and program name gives an incomplete picture of what the record describes.
PBDA's map notice says the information may change and does not constitute a final award for a pending grant or a commitment by the authority. It also disclaims guarantees about the data's accuracy and completeness. The state describes connection dates as estimates in its October 2 announcement.
Confirm the details before changing service
Use the provider named in the location record as the starting point for an availability inquiry. Ask whether service is currently orderable at the exact address, what installation is required and what the full recurring price would be. A project estimate cannot answer those purchase questions.
Save the date of the map check for later comparison. PBDA lists assistance information in the map's opening notice and Additional Info control.
