Chester County battery disposal: Check the type first

The local battery chart, Lanchester recycling list and regional event schedule answer different disposal questions.

Chester County residents clearing out batteries should check the battery type before choosing a collection point. A disposal chart and a general recycling list can give different levels of detail, particularly for the lithium polymer packs used in drones and remote control equipment.

The county's October 9 fire prevention notice urged residents to use appropriate recycling programs for lithium batteries. The following guide compares the current local disposal instructions with federal handling guidance.

Read the label before picking a route

The Chester County Solid Waste Authority's battery disposal chart, updated January 14, 2026, distinguishes ordinary alkaline batteries from coin cells and rechargeable types. The chart directs ordinary alkaline cells to regular trash. Coin cells have separate collection options, so a small size alone does not establish the disposal route.

On page 2 of the same chart, the lithium ion row lists household hazardous waste events, the Lanchester drop off facility and a recycling locator. The lithium polymer row, associated with drones, robotics and remote control toys, lists a hazardous waste event.

That distinction matters when reading Lanchester's broader entry for rechargeable batteries. The chart does not establish that every rechargeable pack belongs in the same collection container. Ask about the specific chemistry, size and condition before taking an unfamiliar pack there.

What Lanchester lists for residents

The authority's Lanchester recycling page includes rechargeable batteries among the items accepted in small quantities from residents without a charge. The site lists its address as 7224 Division Highway, Narvon, PA 17555, and its telephone number as 610 273 3771.

The separate hours table lists homeowner recycling from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, with Sunday closed. Check the holiday and weather notices before traveling.

An accepted recycling category is not permission to bring every household chemical to the landfill. The authority's hazardous waste page explicitly directs residents to scheduled collection events for that service.

Chester County's 2026 event season has ended

The current hazardous waste event page says Chester County's 2026 collections are complete. It directs readers to return in March 2027 for the next county schedule and points to remaining regional events in 2026.

The linked regional schedule allows residents of Chester, Bucks, Delaware and Montgomery counties and Philadelphia to attend across county lines. Those collections accept household material, with businesses and contractors excluded. Whole electronics are excluded too; a battery collection and a computer collection are different services.

Use the host county's registration instructions before setting out. A date on the regional flyer does not confirm an available appointment, a changed schedule or acceptance of a particular damaged pack.

Devices and damaged batteries need separate checks

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's consumer guidance says lithium batteries and devices containing them belong outside household trash and curbside recycling. For batteries prepared for recycling, it recommends insulating terminals with nonconductive tape and placing individual batteries or devices in separate plastic bags.

EPA also cautions that some batteries cannot be removed or serviced by the user. For a damaged battery, contact the battery or device manufacturer for specific handling instructions. Routine drop off information should not be treated as instructions for managing a damaged or leaking pack.
